I was nine when I first noticed it. I woke up one morning, and my room smelled of roses. Not from any perfume or candle, just a strong, sweet scent hanging in the air. A few days later, my grandmother passed away.
At first, I didn't think much of it. I told myself it was a coincidence. But it kept happening. A friend’s father fell ill, and I caught that same floral whiff in my car on the way home from school. He died that weekend. When our old dog had to be put down, I smelled roses the night before. The pattern became impossible to ignore. Over the years, it has happened before the passing of relatives, acquaintances, and even a neighbor's cat. The scent is always the same—fresh, overpowering, and unmistakable. It appears out of nowhere, lingers for a moment, and then vanishes.
Now, I have a strange aversion to roses. I can't walk into a florist without feeling a knot in my stomach. I’ve heard a few ideas over time. Some people say it’s the deceased saying goodbye, a last gift of comfort. Others mention saints, angels, or the Blessed Mother. Some think it’s a psychic sense, a kind of premonition. I’m not sure what to believe.
I just know what I’ve smelled and what followed. Has anyone else experienced something like this? When you catch a scent that doesn’t belong, do you ever wonder what it means? I’d be grateful to hear your thoughts.
