Curious about black and brown fuzzy caterpillars and winter superstitions

I’ve always been fascinated by nature, and my dad and uncle, who’ve spent their lives outdoors, often share interesting tips and superstitions. One that’s always stuck with me is the idea that black or brown fuzzy caterpillars signal a rough winter ahead. I’ve heard this from a few others too, but I’m curious—where did this belief come from? Is there any truth to it? Have you guys heard anything like this before?

I'm uncertain about its authenticity or origins, but I'm really hoping it turns out to be true. It's been ages since I've experienced a decent snowfall, and I’m eagerly anticipating one. The anticipation of the first gentle snowflakes drifting down fills me with excitement. There's something magical about the world transforming into a winter wonderland, blanketed in white, and it's an experience I've missed dearly. As someone who loves bundling up and watching the snow fall from the comfort of my cozy home, I can't wait to embrace that winter magic once more!

I witnessed these caterpillars go top to tail up light poles emmasse.. billions of them on this suburban ridge. not just one light pole but all as far as the eye could see.
A few days later we had the '74 cyclone and associated flooding.
I observe ants while walking my dog. If I notice frantic ant activity, I prepare for rain. never failed me yet.
